Rock Garden

A sculpture garden built secretly from industrial waste, starting in 1957 — now one of Chandigarh's most-visited sights.

Built in secret, on government land.

Nek Chand, a government road inspector, began building the Rock Garden in 1957 out of urban and industrial waste — broken tiles, bangles, electrical fittings, discarded pottery — entirely without official permission, on land he wasn't authorized to use. By the time authorities discovered it, the site had grown into a sprawling sculpture park too remarkable to demolish.

Today it spans courtyards, waterfalls, and winding narrow passages filled with thousands of mosaic figures, unlike anything else in the city.

Good To Know

The garden's narrow, winding paths are part of the design — give it more time than you'd expect from the entrance alone.
